In 1988, the church was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is a special building that is protected because of its history. The Latham United Methodist Church is one of the few buildings left from the old community of Latham, Alabama.

History of Latham Church

The area where the church stands was once a busy community. It was probably named after Latham Cooper. He was the first postmaster there. The town had a post office called Latham from 1880 to 1960. Before the post office, the town was known as Red Hill.

Early Beginnings

The church itself started a long time ago, in 1847. Back then, the church meetings were held in a log house. This first log house was about half a mile northeast of where the church is today.

Moving to New Buildings

Over the years, the church moved a few times. In 1852, the church moved to a new log building. This second building was about 150 feet north of the current church. Later, in 1886, they moved again. This time, they used a building made of wood frames.

The Current Church Building

The church moved into its final and current building in 1906. This is the beautiful building you see today. In 1909, the church officially changed its name to Lathem. This name change helped it match the community's name. The church has been a central part of the community for many years.
