Laura Frankel (born Laura Charlene Johnson on January 3, 1961) is an American chef and author. She is also a restaurateur, which means she owns or manages restaurants. Laura Frankel is especially known for her skills in Jewish cooking.
Laura Frankel: A Chef and Author
Laura Frankel has written two cookbooks. These books share her knowledge of Jewish cuisine. Her first book is called Jewish Cooking for All Seasons. Her second book is Jewish Slow Cooker Recipes. Both books help people learn how to make delicious Jewish meals at home.
Her Restaurants
Laura Frankel started her own restaurants called Shallots. She opened her first one in 1999. These restaurants offered "kosher fine dining." This means the food followed Jewish dietary laws and was also very fancy. Her menus focused on fresh produce.
In 2000, she opened another Shallots restaurant in midtown Manhattan, New York. Later, in 2004, she moved her Chicago restaurant to Skokie, Illinois. Skokie is a suburb near Chicago with many Jewish people. She renamed it Shallots Bistro.
Working with Wolfgang Puck
In 2007, Laura Frankel became an executive chef for Wolfgang Puck Kosher Catering. Wolfgang Puck is a very famous chef. Laura worked with him in Los Angeles. She also became the executive chef at the Spertus Institute for Jewish Studies in Chicago.
In 2013, Laura Frankel was honored at an event called Kosherfeast. This event celebrated 25 years of Kosherfest, a big trade show for kosher foods. She was recognized for being a leader in modern kosher cooking.
