Laura Woods' Broadcasting Journey
Laura started her career in broadcasting while she was still studying at Trinity College Dublin. She began working as a voice-over announcer for RTÉ Radio. This early experience helped her learn the ropes of the media world.
Early Radio and TV Roles
In 1999, Laura hosted the Breakfast Show on Trinity FM, a college radio station. The following year, in 2000, she joined RTÉ Television as a continuity announcer. This meant she would introduce shows and tell viewers what was coming up next.
Becoming a TV Presenter
Laura moved from just announcing to presenting her own shows in September 2002. She became the main presenter for a show called iD, which was later renamed iD Two. She stayed with this show until May 2005.
In 2004, Laura also started co-presenting three series of The Cafe with Aidan Power. This was a popular show where they chatted about different topics.
Special Events Coverage
Laura also helped cover big events. She anchored RTÉ's coverage of the Festival of World Cultures in both 2005 and 2006. In July 2005, she joined Dave Fanning in Hyde Park, London, to cover Live8. This was a huge music concert event that aimed to raise awareness about poverty.
Hosting Game Shows
In September 2005, Laura hosted a show called SMS. However, she soon left that show to focus on a very popular game show. From January to March 2006, she presented Winning Streak, which is a game show for the Irish National Lottery. She filled in for the regular presenter, Derek Mooney, during that time.
Laura continued to host other Irish National Lottery game shows. In June 2006, she presented Fame and Fortune. She then went on to host its follow-up shows: The Trump Card from June to August 2007, and The Big Money Game from June to August 2008.
Other Appearances
In 2007, Laura also started presenting an event guide on 2fm's The Will Leahy Show. She also made an appearance on the People in Need Telethon, a special fundraising event. In the first half of 2008, she appeared as a participant on the TV series Anonymous.
Moving to Virgin Media Television
In 2011, Laura made a big move to an independent TV station called Virgin Media Television. There, she was a panellist on the Midday programme. She also became a co-presenter for the breakfast show Ireland AM. Laura left Ireland AM in 2021 when new presenters took over the show.
