Laura del Río García (born on 5 February 1982) is a Spanish football player and manager. She used to play as a forward, which means she was a player who focused on scoring goals. Laura also managed a men's football team called Flat Earth FC.
Before becoming a manager, Laura played for many teams. In England, she played for Bristol Academy. She also played for Spanish teams like AD Torrejón, CE Sabadell, and Levante UD. In the United States, she played for FC Indiana, Boston Breakers, and Philadelphia Independence. She also played for 1. FFC Frankfurt in Germany. Club Career Highlights
Laura del Río started her football journey in 1999 with AD Torrejón. The next year, she joined Levante UD. During her two years in Valencia, her team won the league and cup twice. This is often called winning "the double."
Playing for Sabadell and Levante
After her time at Levante, Laura played for CE Sabadell for two seasons. Then, she returned to Levante, where she stayed for four more years. During this second period, she helped Levante win another league title in 2008 and two more cup trophies.
Playing Abroad: USA and Germany
In 2008, Laura decided to play football outside of Spain for the first time. She joined FC Indiana in the United States. She was a great scorer there, getting 33 goals in two years. Her excellent performance earned her a spot on the All-League team.
In the summer of 2009, she moved to Germany to play for 1. FFC Frankfurt, a very strong European team. She started as a substitute player but quickly showed her talent. She scored in three games in a row after coming off the bench. Overall, she scored six goals in just ten matches in the German league.
Return to the USA and England
In December 2009, Laura left Frankfurt to join Boston Breakers in the USA. For the 2011 season, she moved to Philadelphia Independence. With this team, she reached the championship play-offs. In the final match, her team finished as runners-up after she missed the last penalty kick.
In 2012, Laura joined the English club Bristol Academy. Under coach Mark Sampson, the team finished second in the 2013 league season. They also reached the final of the 2012–13 FA Women's Cup but lost. In January 2015, Laura left Bristol after scoring 14 goals in 47 games.
Later Career in USA and Spain
Laura then went back to the United States to play for Washington Spirit. She played 11 games in 2015, helping her team with two assists. However, her season ended early due to an injury. She also missed the entire 2016 season because she needed surgery on her ankle.
After recovering, she continued her career in Spain. She joined CD Tacón, a team in the second division. A year later, she signed with Madrid CFF.
International Career for Spain
Laura del Río was a very important player for the Spain women's national football team. She was the top scorer in the 2000 Under-18 Euro tournament. In that competition, Spain reached the final for the first time in their history.
For many years, Laura was a key player for Spain, scoring 14 goals. However, she stopped being called to play for the national team after a disagreement with the coach, Ignacio Quereda.
Managerial Career
After she stopped playing football, Laura del Río started a new career as a manager. In August 2019, she became the head coach of Flat Earth FC. This made her the first woman to manage a team in the Spanish fourth division.
Her time as head coach ended in October 2019. However, she continued to work with the club. Her new goal was to help them create a women's football team.
