A Key Capture in Battle

A Special Reward

Two years later, in 1423, Laurence Vernon made a deal. He exchanged John Beaufort with King Charles VII of France. In return, King Charles VII paid him a large sum of money: 40,000 gold ecus. An "ecu" was a type of gold coin used in France a long time ago.

For his brave service, Laurence Vernon was also made a knight. Plus, he was given control of the land and castle of Montreuil-Bonnin in a region of France called Poitou. This showed how much the king valued his actions.
