Lawndale Art Center is a special place in Houston, Texas, USA, where you can see amazing modern art. It's a non-profit organization, which means it focuses on art and community, not making money. Lawndale mostly shows art made by artists from the Houston area.

The center was started in 1979 by an artist named James Surls. He used an old warehouse that was once part of the University of Houston. At first, it was a place for art students to work. Soon, it became a gallery showing art from many local artists.

In 1989, Lawndale Art Center became its own independent non-profit group. Since 1992, it has been in a beautiful building from the 1930s. This building is in Houston's Museum District and was designed by Joseph Finger. Every year, the galleries show art from nearly 500 different artists.

Lawndale hosts over twenty art shows, talks, and special events each year. Some popular yearly events include Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) and "The Big Show."

A group of community members, including many artists, helps run Lawndale. Volunteers and interns also help with exhibitions and events. In September 2021, Anna Walker became the new Executive Director.

Lawndale's Artist Studio Program

Lawndale Art Center has a special program for artists. It's called the Lawndale Artist Studio Program. This program lasts for nine months. Artists get a studio space to work in. They also receive money each month and funds for art supplies. During this time, artists create new artwork. Their new art is then shown in a special exhibition in the spring.
