Lawrence S. Wittner (born May 5, 1941) is an American historian. He has written many books and articles about peace movements, how countries deal with each other, and fairness in money matters.

About Lawrence S. Wittner
Lawrence S. Wittner was born in Brooklyn, New York. He went to college at Columbia College and then studied history at the University of Wisconsin and Columbia University. He earned his Ph.D. in history in 1967.
After finishing his studies, he taught at several colleges. He also taught in Japan through a special program called Fulbright. In 1974, he started teaching at the State University of New York at Albany. He became a full Professor of History there before he retired in 2010.
His Work and Awards
Mr. Wittner has written nine books and helped edit four others. He has also written about 400 articles and book reviews. From 1984 to 1987, he was the editor of a journal called Peace & Change. This journal focuses on peace research.
He has won several important awards for his work. In 1989, his article "Peace Movements and Foreign Policy" won the Charles DeBenedetti award. His book One World or None: A History of the World Nuclear Disarmament Movement Through 1953 won the Warren Kuehl Book Prize in 1995. He also received an award for his excellent scholarship, teaching, and service in 1990. In 2011, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Peace History Society.
Mr. Wittner was also the president of the Council on Peace Research in History. This group is now known as the Peace History Society. He also led the Peace History Commission for a global peace research group.
He has received important grants and support from big organizations. These include the American Council of Learned Societies and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. He has also spoken at the United Nations and the Norwegian Nobel Institute. He has given talks at many universities around the world.
Working for Peace
Lawrence Wittner is well-known for his work in the anti-nuclear movement. This movement tries to stop the spread and use of nuclear weapons. He believes that public protests helped stop plans to build a dangerous weapon called the neutron bomb. He also thinks these protests helped start the process of reducing nuclear weapons. This process began with the NATO Double-Track Decision.
