LeJeune's Bakery is a very old and famous bakery located at 1510 Main Street in Jeanerette, Louisiana. It's known for its delicious French bread, ginger cakes, and garlic bread. This special building is so important that it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

A Taste of History

LeJeune's Bakery first opened its doors way back in 1884. It was started by Oscar J. LeJeune and was originally called the Old Reliable City Bakery. Imagine a bakery that has been making tasty treats for over 130 years!

In 1918, Oscar's relatives, O.A. LeJeune and Walter LeJeune, Sr., bought the bakery. They gave the building a big makeover. Sometime between 1918 and 1934, the bakery was renamed LeJeune's. It has kept that name ever since.

Even today, the bakery continues to bake and sell its popular products. It's a true local treasure in Jeanerette.

What is the National Register of Historic Places?

The National Register of Historic Places is an official list kept by the United States government. It includes buildings, sites, and objects that are important in American history, architecture, archaeology, engineering, or culture.

When a place is added to this list, it means it's recognized as special and worth preserving. LeJeune's Bakery was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 22, 2003. This shows how important the bakery is to the history of Jeanerette and Louisiana.
