The LeMoine Building's Story
The LeMoine Building was built in 1913. It was a place where people bought and sold things. This type of building is called a commercial building. It helped the community of Gheen grow.
Why is This Building Important?
In 1989, the LeMoine Building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of important places in the United States. Buildings on this list are saved because they tell us about history. The LeMoine Building is special for a few reasons.
A Rare False-Front Building
One reason it's special is its "false-front" design. Many old buildings in northern Minnesota used to look like this. A false-front building has a tall front wall. This wall hides the roof behind it. It makes a small building look bigger and more important. The LeMoine Building is one of the few false-front buildings left.
Gheen's History
The LeMoine Building is also the most complete old building in Gheen. Gheen was once a "lumber-era townsite." This means it was a town built around the logging industry. Trees were cut down and used for wood. The LeMoine Building helps us remember Gheen's past. It shows what life was like when logging was very important.
