Leavitt Township's Past

How the Township Got Its Name

Leavitt Township was once part of a larger area called Elbridge Township. It became its own separate township and was named after Hazen Leavitt. He was the very first settler to arrive in this area in 1864. Hazen Leavitt's family had a long history in America, tracing back to Thomas Leavitt, an early English settler in New Hampshire.

Early Settlers and Farming Life

After Hazen Leavitt arrived, other settlers soon followed. In 1865, David Lampson and John Henning moved to the area, likely with their families. Over time, Leavitt Township became well-known for its farms. By the 21st century, it was especially famous for growing asparagus crops. This farming work has also brought many Hispanic workers to the area.
