Leo Brincat, born on September 26, 1949, is a well-known politician from Malta. Since 2016, he has been an important member of the European Court of Auditors. This is a special group that checks how money is spent in the European Union.
Mr. Brincat first became a member of the Maltese Parliament in 1982. He was part of the Labour Party. He also served as a minister in the government. From 1997 to 1998, he was the Minister for Finance and Commerce. Later, from 2013 to 2016, he was the Minister for Sustainable Development, the Environment, and Climate Change. After this, he was chosen to join the European Court of Auditors.

About Leo Brincat
Leo Brincat studied banking and became an expert in the field. He was a member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers in London.
He worked in banking for 40 years, starting in 1966. He worked for different banks, including Barclays Bank and HSBC Bank Malta plc. He even led a team that researched companies from 1998 to 2006. Before becoming a minister again in 2013, he helped businesses with their money rules.
His Time in Parliament
Mr. Brincat was first elected to the Parliament of Malta in 1982. He represented the Labour Party. He stayed as a Member of Parliament (MP) until 2016. An MP is someone elected by people to speak for them in the country's main law-making group.
From 1982 to 1997, he was also the international secretary for the Labour Party. This meant he helped the party connect with other political groups around the world.
In 1986 and 1987, he worked in the office of the Prime Minister, Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici. He was a parliamentary secretary for housing.
As a Government Minister
When Alfred Sant was Prime Minister, Leo Brincat was a minister. From 1996 to 1997, he was the Minister for Commerce. Then, from 1997 to 1998, he became the Minister for Finance and Commerce.
Later, when Joseph Muscat was Prime Minister, Mr. Brincat served as a minister again. From 2013 to 2016, he was the Minister for Sustainable Development, the Environment, and Climate Change. In this role, he worked on protecting Malta's environment and dealing with climate change.
Joining the European Court of Auditors
In 2016, Prime Minister Muscat chose Leo Brincat to be Malta's representative at the European Court of Auditors. This is an important job where he helps make sure that the money of the European Union is used correctly. The European Parliament approved his appointment.
Mr. Brincat was given an award in December 2017 by the Parliament of Malta. He was made an Officer of the National Order of Merit. He also received an award from the St. Julian's Local Council in May 2019.
