Leofwine, Ealdorman of the Hwicce facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Leofwine was an important leader in Anglo-Saxon England. He was a powerful official called an Ealdorman. Think of an Ealdorman like a governor or a very important local leader.

Leofwine was first appointed Ealdorman of a region called the Hwicce in 994. This happened under King Æthelred the Unready. The Hwicce was a kingdom in the western part of England. It later became part of a larger area called Mercia.

Leofwine's father was Ælfwine. Not much is known about Ælfwine. Leofwine's family likely came from the eastern parts of England.

Leofwine's Role and Influence

Leofwine's main job was in the Hwicce areas. These included what we now call Worcestershire and Gloucestershire. He served King Æthelred in these regions.

Changes Under King Cnut

A new king, Cnut, took over England in 1016. King Cnut gave these areas to Danish leaders. However, Leofwine was still able to keep his important position.

In 1017, Leofwine might have become the Ealdorman of all Mercia. This was after the previous Ealdorman, Eadric Streona, left his role.

A Family Loss

Sadly, in that same year, Leofwine's oldest son, Northman, died by order of King Cnut.

Later Life and Family

Leofwine is last mentioned in official records in 1023. He was listed as a witness to important documents. He likely died soon after this time.

Leofwine had other sons. His son Leofric became the Earl of Mercia by 1032. Another son, Edwine, died in a battle in 1039. Leofwine also had a son named Godwine.
