Leonard Hamm is a former leader of the Baltimore Police Department. He served as the commissioner (the head of the department) from 2004 to 2007. He dedicated many years to public service in his hometown of Baltimore.
Early Life and Career
Leonard Hamm grew up in the Cherry Hill neighborhood of Baltimore. He attended Baltimore City College before joining the police department in 1974. He worked hard and moved up through the ranks.
He became a Lieutenant and then a Major. Under Commissioner Thomas Frazier, Hamm made history. He became the first African American officer to lead the Central District of the Baltimore Police Department. This was a big step for the department.
Commissioner of Police
In 2004, Leonard Hamm was chosen to be the Commissioner of the Baltimore Police Department. This meant he was in charge of the entire police force. During his time as commissioner, he faced many challenges.
In 2007, Mayor Sheila Dixon asked Hamm to step down from his role. He was succeeded by Frederick H. Bealefeld III. After leaving the Baltimore Police Department, Hamm continued his career in public safety. He worked as the Chief of Campus Police at Coppin State University in Baltimore until June 2021.
In 2015, Leonard Hamm shared his experiences and wisdom in a book. It was titled The Hamm Rules on Relationships, Leadership, Love and Community.
Family Connections
Leonard Hamm has a grandson who is also well-known. His grandson, Malik Hamm, is a professional football player. Malik Hamm plays as a linebacker for the Baltimore Ravens.
