Sir Leonard Gregory Parsons (born November 25, 1879 – died December 17, 1950) was an important British doctor who specialized in treating children. Early Life and Education

Leonard Gregory Parsons began his studies at Mason College in 1896. This college later became part of the University of Birmingham. He continued his medical education there until 1903. In the same year, he earned his medical degree from the University of London.

A Doctor for Children

Sir Leonard became a Professor of Paediatrics at the University of Birmingham. This meant he taught other doctors how to care for children. He also became the dean of the University of Birmingham Medical School, which is a very important leadership role.

Fighting Scurvy with Vitamin C

One of his most famous achievements happened in 1932. Sir Leonard was the first doctor to use a man-made form of Vitamin C to treat a disease called scurvy in children. Scurvy is a serious illness caused by not getting enough Vitamin C. It can make people feel very weak, have bleeding gums, and bruise easily. His work helped many children recover from this illness.

Awards and Recognition

Sir Leonard Gregory Parsons received many honors for his important work.

  • In 1942, he was given the Moxon Medal by the Royal College of Physicians. This is a special award for doctors who have made great contributions to medicine.
  • He was knighted in 1946, which means he was given the title "Sir" by the King or Queen. This is a high honor in Britain.
  • In 1948, he was chosen to be a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a very prestigious group of top scientists and researchers.
  • Just before he passed away in 1950, he delivered the Harveian Oration. This is an important speech given each year at the Royal College of Physicians.
