The Leonard Sturtevant House is a special old home located at 84 Mulberry Street in Worcester, Massachusetts. Built around 1849, it shows a unique style called Greek Revival. This house is one of the few buildings left from when the Belmont Hill area of the city first started to grow. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, which means it's officially recognized as an important historic site.

What Makes This House Special?

The Leonard Sturtevant House is found southeast of downtown Worcester. It sits at the corner of Mulberry and Prospect Streets, near the bottom of Belmont Hill. This house is a two-and-a-half story building made of wood. It has a pointed roof and its outside is covered with modern siding.

Unique Design Features

The house has a "T" shape, with parts sticking out on each side. Both the front of the house and the projecting sections have triangular gables. These gables are fully "pedimented," which means they look like the triangular tops of ancient Greek temples. The main gable has a rounded window, while the side gables have small, eight-sided windows.

Right where the "T" shape crosses, there's a square tower called a cupola on top. A porch with round columns, known as Doric columns, wraps around the front and sides of the house. Some of the original fancy Greek Revival details have been covered up or lost over time.

A Glimpse into History

This house was built around 1849. At that time, the Belmont Hill area was briefly popular for middle-class families. They built homes on large plots of land.

Changes in the Neighborhood

However, this period didn't last long. The area was close to factories and other industrial sites. Because of this, the neighborhood later changed. More crowded housing for workers was built in the late 1800s.

Who Was Leonard Sturtevant?

Leonard Sturtevant was the first known owner of this house. He was a tailor, someone who makes and repairs clothes. He lived in this house during the late 19th century. The house stands as a reminder of how Worcester grew and changed over time.
