Leonhard Hutter

Leonhard Hutter (born January 19, 1563 – died October 23, 1616) was an important German Lutheran theologian. A theologian is someone who studies and teaches about religious beliefs. Hutter was known for strongly defending the ideas of the Lutheran faith.

About Leonhard Hutter

Leonhard Hutter was born in a town called Nellingen, which is close to Ulm in Germany. He started his studies in 1581. He went to several famous universities, including Strasbourg, Leipzig, Heidelberg, and Jena.

In 1594, Hutter began teaching about theology at the University of Jena. Just two years later, in 1596, he became a professor of theology at the University of Wittenberg. This was a very important university at the time. He continued to teach there for twenty years until he passed away.

His Important Writings

Leonhard Hutter was a very strong supporter of Lutheran beliefs. He worked hard to make sure these beliefs were understood and followed correctly. People even called him "Luther redonatus," which means "Luther given back," because he was so loyal to the teachings of Martin Luther.

Defending Lutheran Beliefs

One of Hutter's most famous books was called Compendium locorum theologicorum (published in 1610). This book explained the main ideas of Lutheran theology. It was so important that it was printed again many years later.

Hutter also wrote other books to defend Lutheran ideas against different views. For example, he wrote Concordia concors in 1614. This book was a response to another writer, Rudolf Hospinian. Hutter's book defended the Formula of Concord, which was an important document that explained Lutheran beliefs. He believed this document was very important and true.

Against Other Ideas

Hutter also wrote against ideas that he thought were wrong. His book Irenicum vere christianum was written against David Pareus. Pareus wanted Lutherans and Calvinists to unite, but Hutter disagreed.

Another book, Calvinista aulico-politicus (1610), was written because Hutter was worried about Calvinist ideas spreading in some parts of Germany. He wanted to make sure Lutheranism remained strong. He also wrote Loci communes theologici, which was another work based on the Formula of Concord.
