The Azuero dove (Leptotila battyi) is a special kind of bird found only in Panama. It's also known as the brown-backed dove. This bird belongs to the Columbidae family, which includes all doves and pigeons. It is an endemic species, meaning it lives naturally in only one place in the world.

Understanding the Azuero Dove's Family Tree

Scientists study how different animals are related. This is called taxonomy. The Azuero dove was once thought to be the same species as a few other doves. These include the grey-fronted dove, pallid dove, grey-headed dove, and Grenada dove.

Today, most bird experts agree that the Azuero dove is its own species. However, some groups of scientists still debate if it should be part of the grey-headed dove family. This shows how scientists keep learning new things about animals!

What Does the Azuero Dove Look Like?

The Azuero dove is a medium-sized bird, about 23.5 to 25.5 centimeters (9 to 10 inches) long.

Colors and Markings

  • Head: Adult males have a pale gray forehead. The top of their head and back of their neck are slate gray. The rest of their face and throat are a reddish-gray color.
  • Body: Their chest is a lovely pink color. Their belly and underside are white. The upper parts of their body are chestnut brown.
  • Tail: The middle tail feathers are chestnut brown. The outer ones are brownish-black with brownish-white tips.
  • Eyes: They have yellow or greenish-yellow eyes. Around their eyes, there is bare red skin.
  • Beak and Legs: Their beak is black. Their legs and feet are a dull red or pinkish-red.

Female Azuero doves look very similar to males. However, their back and chest colors are a bit duller. Young doves have brown feathers with cinnamon markings on their head, neck, and upper chest.

There are also slightly different versions of the Azuero dove. Some are a darker brown overall, with paler gray on their head and chest.

Where Do Azuero Doves Live?

The Azuero dove lives only in Panama. It is found in two main areas:

  • Coiba Island: One group of Azuero doves lives on Coiba Island. This island is off the south-central coast of Panama.
  • Panama Mainland: Another group lives on the Pacific side of west-central Panama. They also live on Cébaco Island, which is near the mainland.

Preferred Homes

These doves like to live in tall forests and wooded swamps. On the mainland, they are usually found in hilly areas, like Cerro Hoya. However, on Coiba Island, they can be found at many different heights.

How Do Azuero Doves Behave?

We are still learning a lot about the Azuero dove's daily life!

Finding Food

Azuero doves usually look for food on the ground. They often search in small groups of two or three birds. Scientists don't know much yet about what they eat or their exact feeding habits.

Raising Young

Not much is known about how Azuero doves raise their young. Scientists are still studying their breeding habits.

What Do They Sound Like?

The Azuero dove has a special call. When it wants to attract a mate or mark its territory, it makes a repeated single cooing sound.

Is the Azuero Dove in Danger?

The IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) has listed the Azuero dove as Vulnerable. This means it is at risk of becoming endangered if we don't protect it.

Why is it Vulnerable?

  • Small Home: The Azuero dove lives in a very small area. This area is also broken up into smaller pieces.
  • Shrinking Habitat: On the mainland, the places where these doves live are getting smaller. This is often due to human activities like farming or building.

Good News for Coiba Island

On Coiba Island, there's some good news! The land that was once used for farming or pastures is slowly returning to forest. This means more habitat for the Azuero doves there. Protecting their forests is very important for their future.
