The Lesser Duskhawker (Gynacantha dobsoni) is a fascinating type of dragonfly. It's part of a group of dragonflies known as the Aeshnidae family. These amazing insects live near ponds and swamps, and you can find them flying around in northern Australia.
About the Lesser Duskhawker
The Lesser Duskhawker is a large dragonfly. It usually has a dull color. One special feature is its "waist," which looks a bit squeezed in on its body, specifically at segment 3 of its abdomen.
What Does It Look Like?
This dragonfly is smaller than another similar species called Gynacantha rosenbergi. Even though it's smaller, it shares many features with its cousin. Scientists have studied many Lesser Duskhawkers. From 35 specimens kept in the Australian National Insect Collection at the CSIRO, we know their average wingspan is about 109 millimeters (that's almost 4.3 inches!). Their total length, including all their body parts, is around 78 millimeters (about 3 inches).
When Does It Fly?
The Lesser Duskhawker is a crepuscular insect. This means it doesn't fly much during the bright middle of the day. Instead, it's most active at dawn (when the sun is rising) and at dusk (when the sun is setting). This special flying time helps it avoid predators and find food.
