Lester McClain, born on September 17, 1949, is an important person in American football history. He played as a wide receiver, which is a player who catches passes from the quarterback. Lester McClain made history by becoming the very first African American football player at the University of Tennessee.

Lester McClain: A Football Pioneer

Early Life and College Career

Lester McClain grew up in Antioch, Tennessee. He went to Antioch High School. In 1967, he joined the University of Tennessee Volunteers football team. At that time, new college students, called freshmen, could not play on the main varsity team. So, Lester played for the Volunteers from 1968 to 1970.

During his three years playing college football, Lester McClain was a great player. He caught 70 passes, gaining a total of 1,003 yards. He also scored 10 touchdowns by catching the ball. Besides catching, he ran with the ball 30 times, gaining 123 yards, and scored two more touchdowns. He also returned eight kickoffs, running 168 yards.

Professional Football Dreams

After his successful college career, Lester McClain hoped to play professional football. In 1971, the Chicago Bears team chose him in the NFL draft. This draft is where professional teams pick new players from colleges. He was the 220th player chosen overall. However, he was cut from the team before the season started. This means the team decided not to keep him on their roster.

Lester McClain's legacy as the first African American player at the University of Tennessee is still remembered today. He opened doors for many others who followed him.
