Let Books Be Books facts for kids
Let Books Be Books is a campaign that started in March 2014. Its main goal is to convince companies that publish children's books to stop labeling them as "for boys" or "for girls."
What is Let Books Be Books?
This campaign was created by parents. They want all children to feel free to choose any book they like. They believe that books should not tell kids what they "should" or "shouldn't" read based on their gender.
Why Books for All Kids?
The people behind Let Books Be Books say that children pay close attention to messages they get. These messages come from books, toys, ads, and even adults. The campaign asks: Do we really want kids to think certain things are off-limits for them just because they are a boy or a girl?
They believe it's okay if a girl likes robots. It's also okay if a boy wants to draw flowers. The campaign wants publishers to "Let Books Be Books." This means letting children pick their own interests without being told what's "for them."
How the Campaign Started
The idea for Let Books Be Books grew from discussions among parents. These talks happened on an online forum called Mumsnet. The campaign is also connected to another group called Let toys be toys. That group works to stop toy companies from making toys "for boys" or "for girls." Let Books Be Books is like a spin-off from that earlier campaign.
