The Levi Sargent House is a very old and special home located at 747 Otisfield Gore Road in Otisfield, Maine. It was built around 1812. This house is unique because it's one of the few log homes from the 1800s that are still standing in Maine! Because of its history, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

What Makes This House Special?

The Sargent House is a one-and-a-half story building. It has a main part and a long section attached to it, called an "ell." The front of the house faces southwest.

Hidden Log Structure

Even though the house looks like it's made of wooden boards called clapboards, it's actually built from logs underneath! The clapboards were added later, hiding the original log walls. These logs were cut roughly and held together with limestone mortar in the gaps. At the corners, the logs fit together using a special "square corner notch" method.

Inside the House

The main part of the house has a central hallway. On each side of the hall are large rooms. In the western room, a narrow staircase leads upstairs. Upstairs, there are four smaller rooms connected by a narrow hallway. The "ell" part of the house was built later, probably around the time the front door was updated. This section has three rooms and was built using traditional wood framing.

Who Built the House?

The house was likely built by Levi Sargent. He was born in 1786 and passed away in 1861. Levi Sargent was a Methodist minister. He moved to the Otisfield area in the 1790s. In 1811, he got married. That same year, he bought the land where the house now stands. The property was quite large, about 109 acres (about 44 hectares) at the time.
