This tower has a bell section and a unique roof that slopes inward.

The History of Lewiston City Hall

Lewiston has had two city halls. The first City Hall started being built in July 1871. It was officially opened in December 1872. The plans for this building were made by Mr. Meacham from Boston. It was built with brick and granite. It had a Gothic style with a special roof called a mansard roof. This first building cost about $200,000 to build.

The original city hall had 80 rooms inside. It was a very busy place. The police department and even a prison were in the basement. The city library and the post office were on the first floor. This building stood for 18 years.

The Fire of 1890

On January 7, 1890, a big fire started. It began behind an elevator wall. The fire quickly spread and destroyed the entire building. The city hall was not insured. This meant the city lost a lot of money and the building was a total loss.

Building the New City Hall

After the fire, the city needed a new place for its government. The current City Hall was built on the same spot. It started on October 1, 1890. It was officially opened on May 19, 1892. The new building was a bit smaller than the first one.

The total cost to build the new City Hall was $180,298.40. This price included taking down the burnt remains of the old building. The new City Hall was designed by John Calvin Spofford. He was a famous architect from Boston, Massachusetts.
