About Liam Mac Cóil's Life
Liam Mac Cóil was born in Dublin in 1952. Today, he lives in Ráth Cairn, a special area in County Meath. A Gaeltacht is a place in Ireland where people mainly speak Irish.
Before he became a full-time writer, he worked for a while at An Coiste Téarmaíochta. This group helps create Irish words for new ideas.
Today, he helps edit a yearly literary magazine called Bliainiris. He also runs a publishing company called Carbad.

Liam Mac Cóil has written many books. He has written seven novels and a special journal about writing. This journal is called Nótaí ón Lár, which means 'Notes from the Centre'.
Early in his career, he translated two books from Welsh. One was Tiocfaidh Lá, a collection of writings by Ffred Ffransis. The other was Saibhreas Chnoic Chaspair, a book for young adults by J. Selwyn Lloyd.
In 2010, he wrote a book about the composer Charles Villiers Stanford. It was called An Chláirseach agus an Choróin. His writings have also appeared in magazines like Comhar, Feasta, and Aimsir Óg.
Awards and Special Recognition
Liam Mac Cóil's first novel was called An Dochtúir Áthas. In 1995, it was chosen for the Irish Times Literature Prize for Fiction. This was a big deal because it was the first Irish-language novel to get this honor.
His third novel, Fontenoy, won a special award in 2006. This award is called the Gradam Uí Shúilleabháin. It is given every year to important books written in Irish.
