Liberty Park (Los Angeles) facts for kids
Liberty Park is a special private park in Los Angeles, California. You can find it on Wilshire Boulevard in the lively Koreatown neighborhood. This park is now an important L.A. City Cultural Monument. This means it's a place recognized for its history and importance to the city.
History of Liberty Park
Liberty Park was created in 1967. A company called Beneficial Insurance Group built an 11-story office building at 3700 Wilshire Boulevard. This building became their main office, first called Beneficial Plaza and now known as Wilshire Park Place. The company decided to build the office building a bit further back from Wilshire Boulevard. This created a half-acre green space in front, which became Liberty Park.
In 2018, the park became a city Historical Monument. This happened because the owners of the land wanted to replace the park with a very tall 36-story apartment building. But people in the neighborhood didn't want the park to be removed. They worked together to save it. Because of this strong community support, the Los Angeles City Council officially made the park a landmark in March 2018.
Today, Liberty Park is a very popular place for people to gather in Los Angeles. Many festivals and street markets are held there. It has also become a favorite spot for watching big events like World Cup soccer matches. This is especially true for Korean Americans, because Radio Korea, a popular radio station, is located in the Wilshire Park Place building next to the park.
