Biography

Early Life and Family

Lina Morgenstern was born on November 25, 1830, in Wrocław, which was then called Breslau in Germany. Her family was Jewish and cared a lot about helping others in their community.

In 1854, she married Theodor Morgenstern. They moved to Berlin, a big city in Germany. Lina and Theodor had five children together: three daughters named Clara, Olga, and Martha, and two sons named Michael and Alfred.

Helping Children Learn

Lina started writing articles about education and how to care for children. She did this to help her family financially when her husband had money problems.

In 1859, Lina and a man named Adolf Lette started an important group. It was called the "Berlin women's association for the advancement of Fröbelian kindergartens." This group wanted to create kindergartens in Berlin. Kindergartens are a type of preschool education for young children. They were a new idea from a teacher named Friedrich Fröbel.

Lina was in charge of this group from 1862 to 1866. During this time, the group opened eight kindergartens in Berlin. They also started a school to train teachers for these kindergartens.

Feeding Those in Need

In 1866, during a war called the Austro-Prussian War, Lina Morgenstern started something very special. She opened Berlin's first Volksküche, which means 'public kitchen' or soup kitchen. This organization offered healthy meals at very low prices. The cost of the meal was usually just enough to cover how much it cost to make it.

Lina believed in helping people who needed food without making them feel like they were getting charity. Her idea was to help people help themselves by providing affordable, good food.

Working for Peace

Lina Morgenstern was also very active in working for peace. In 1896, she organized a big meeting in Berlin. It was called the "International Congress for Women's Works and Women's Endeavors." This meeting brought together women from different places to talk about important issues.

In 1897, she joined the leadership team of the German Peace Society (DFG). This group worked to promote peace and prevent wars. Lina Morgenstern was a true advocate for a better, more peaceful world.

She passed away on December 16, 1909, in Berlin.
