The Linaceae is a family of flowering plants. These plants are found all over the world, which means they are cosmopolitan. There are exactly 250 different species in this family.
The Linaceae family includes 14 main groups, called genera. These groups are further divided into two smaller sections: Linoideae and Hugonioideae. Sometimes, Hugonioideae is even considered its own separate plant family!
What are Linaceae Plants?
Plants in the Linaceae family are known for their simple leaves. This means each leaf is just one single blade, not divided into smaller leaflets.
Leaf Arrangements
The way the leaves grow on the stem can be different for various Linaceae plants.
- Most species have alternate leaves. This means the leaves grow one by one, alternating sides along the stem.
- Some plants, like Sclerolinon and certain types of Linum, have opposite leaves. Here, two leaves grow directly across from each other on the stem.
- A few species, including some Hesperolinon and Linum plants, have whorled leaves. This is when three or more leaves grow in a circle around the stem at the same spot.
