The Story of Linder's Field

Linder's Field is actually a small part of a much older, bigger forest. This ancient forest was once called Pluckett's Wood. Imagine how old some of the trees and plants might be!

The field gets its name from its former owner, Charles Linder. He was a kind person who wanted to protect this land. In 1956, he allowed the local council to use the site for 35 years. This council was first called Chigwell Urban District. Later, it became the Epping Forest Council.

In 1963, Charles Linder's family decided to give the land to the council permanently. This meant it would be protected for good. Then, in the year 2000, Linder's Field was officially named a Local Nature Reserve. This gave it special protection to keep its nature safe.

What You Can Find at Linder's Field

Linder's Field is a mix of different natural areas. It has parts of ancient woodland, which means trees have been growing there for hundreds of years. There are also areas of scrub, which are like bushy patches, and open grasslands.

The site is home to several small ponds. These ponds are perfect for amphibians like frogs, toads, and newts. You might see them swimming or hopping around the water's edge.

Many different plants grow here too. In spring, you can see beautiful bluebells and wood anemones covering the ground. These flowers are a sign of healthy, old woodlands.

There's also a special wildflower meadow at Linder's Field. This meadow is like a busy hotel for wildlife! It provides food and shelter for many creatures.
