Main Characters
- The Narrator is a friendly voice you hear throughout the show. They describe what's happening in the Night Garden. All the characters know the Narrator is there. They often talk to the characters and even sing along with their songs. The Narrator helps guide the story in every episode.
- Igglepiggle is a blue, teddy bear-like creature. He has a bean-shaped head and a red mohawk. Igglepiggle always carries his special red blanket. He often falls over when he is surprised! Igglepiggle is a main character in the show. He arrives in the Night Garden at the start of each episode. He leaves in his boat-like bed at the end. His blanket even acts as a sail! Igglepiggle doesn't speak words. But he has a bell in his foot and a squeaker in his tummy. His best friends are Upsy Daisy, the Tombliboos, and Makka Pakka. Igglepiggle is a visitor to the Garden. The Garden is actually part of his dream. His hello song is "Yes My Name is Igglepiggle."
- Upsy Daisy is a colorful rag doll-like character. She has brown skin and bright clothes. Upsy Daisy loves to walk through the Garden. She often blows kisses to her friends or to you! She enjoys hugging and kissing other characters, especially Igglepiggle. Her special phrases are "Upsy Daisy" and "Daisy Doo!" She also says "Pip pip onk onk!" to say goodbye. When Upsy Daisy gets excited, her hair stands up. Her skirt can even puff out like a tutu when she dances! Upsy Daisy loves to sing, especially with her megaphone. Her hello song is "Upsy Daisy Here I Come."
- Makka Pakka is a small, cute, beige creature. He has three rounded bumps on his head, ears, and tail. These bumps look like the stones he uses to make piles. Makka Pakka lives in a cozy rock cave. He loves to clean things, like his stone collection. He also enjoys cleaning the faces of his friends! He often stacks his clean stones into piles. They look just like his head and body. Makka Pakka sleeps in a colorful stone bag bed. He often cuddles a stone like a toy. He travels around the Garden on his trolley, called the Og-Pog. On his Og-Pog, he carries his sponge, soap, and a trumpet. He also has a special drying tool called the "Uff-Uff." He uses it to dry things after he cleans them. Makka Pakka says his name and "Mikka makka moo" when he is happy. He also says "agga pang" for his soap and sponge. He says "hum dum" for his trumpet. Like Upsy Daisy, he says "pip pip onk onk" for goodbye. His hello song is "Hello Makka Pakka."
- The Tombliboos are a trio of three cute doll-like creatures. Their names are Unn, Ooo, and Eee. They wear striped and spotted outfits. Unn wears red and green. Ooo wears brown and pink. Eee wears pink and yellow. Their names sound like a child counting to three. They always appear in this order. The Tombliboos live in a bush. They play on platforms connected by stairs and slides. These platforms sometimes tilt when they jump! The Tombliboos love playing the drums and the piano. They also play with big building blocks. When they are sad, they play sad music on their piano. Their trousers sometimes fall down! You often see them hanging on the washing line outside their home. They usually put them on before going out. They are sometimes seen brushing their teeth before bed. The Tombliboos enjoy kissing each other. They also have a song about staying together. It goes "Tombliboo, Tombliboo, Unn, Ooo, Eee!" They sleep in striped beds that match their clothes. Their hello song is "Ombliboo Tombliboo."
Other Friends and Vehicles
- The Pontipines (red) and The Wottingers (blue) are two families of tiny wooden doll-like figures. Each family has a mother, a father, four boys, and four girls. They have high-pitched voices. They live in a house at the foot of a tree. The Pontipines appear in most episodes. The Wottingers are seen less often, but more in Series 2. Mr. Pontipine wears a fake mustache. Sometimes it flies off and sticks to things in the Garden! Mrs. Pontipine uses binoculars to watch their children. The Pontipines' song is "10 Pontipines."
- The Haahoos are five large, soft, pillow-like creatures. They float slowly around the Garden. They make boinging and squishing noises as they move. The Haahoos come in different shapes and colors. One is purple and shaped like a pear with yellow flowers. Another is blue and shaped like an X. There's an orange one shaped like a flower. A yellow one is shaped like a star. The last one is a ball shape with red and blue squares. You see them as big inflatable figures in the show. They also appear as computer-generated images during dances. When it's time for bed, they close their eyes and deflate a little.
- The Tittifers are a group of colorful birds with unique songs. There are four small blue birds. There are three larger pink birds. There are two big green birds. And there is one toucan with a large beak. One or two groups of Tittifers sing between parts of the show. They all sing together at the end of each episode. Their song tells everyone it's time to go to sleep.
- The Ninky Nonk is a special train with five different carriages. It can change size! When it's moving outside, it looks like a small toy train. But when characters are inside, it's big enough for them to fit comfortably. Passengers wear seatbelts and sometimes jerk sharply when it moves. Bells and green lights warn everyone when the Ninky Nonk is about to leave or stop. The Ninky Nonk can stop on hills. It can even drive up and down trees! It can also go upside-down along branches. The engine is shaped like a banana. It has a green flashing light. The carriages include a green round one for the Tombliboos and Makka Pakka. There's a tiny house-like carriage for the Pontipines and Wottingers. A blue rectangular carriage is for Upsy Daisy and Igglepiggle when they travel together. And a tall, round carriage is just for Igglepiggle when he's alone. All carriages have lights that flash when the Ninky Nonk stops.
- The Pinky Ponk is a graceful airship, like a zeppelin. It floats gently in the sky. It gives amazing views of the Garden to everyone on board. It is bright turquoise with pink, orange, and yellow spots. Inside the front, there are small tables with Pinky Ponk juice. Characters sit on little stone stools. A huge window lets them look out at the beautiful Night Garden. On top, there's a tiny deck just for the Pontipines. They enter through a small door and take a lift up. The bigger characters enter through a similar-sized door. Outside, it has four rows of wings and tiny purple propellers. At the back, there's a huge pink propeller. There's also a back deck for fresh air. A transparent magenta light at the front flashes when the Pinky Ponk is about to take off, land, or "ponk."
- The Zonk is a newer character. He appeared in the ZinkyZonk Specials. Unlike other characters, Zonk is fully animated using computer graphics. He sends the other characters to a magical place called the ZonkeyZoney. This is where they can relax peacefully.
