Kids Encyclopedia Facts

This is a list of laws, called Acts of Parliament, that were passed by the Parliament of Great Britain in the year 1769. The Parliament of Great Britain was the main law-making body for England, Scotland, and Wales from 1707 to 1800. These laws covered many different parts of life, from taxes and trade to roads and local improvements.

If you want to learn about laws passed before 1707, you can look at lists for the Parliament of England and the Parliament of Scotland. For laws passed after 1801, you'll find them under the Parliament of the United Kingdom.

Understanding These Old Laws

When you see an old law like "39 & 40 Geo. 3 c. 67", it might look confusing! Here's what it means:

  • Geo. 3 stands for King George III.
  • 39 & 40 means the law was passed during the parliamentary session that started in the 39th year of King George III's rule and ended in his 40th year.
  • c. 67 means it was the 67th law passed during that session.

Back then, laws didn't always have a simple, short name like "The Road Act". Sometimes, later laws gave them shorter titles to make them easier to remember. Also, before 1793, a new law was considered to be in effect from the very first day of the parliamentary session it was passed in, even if it was actually approved much later.

Laws from 1769: The 9th Year of George III

The laws listed here were passed during the second meeting of the 13th Parliament of Great Britain. This meeting took place from November 8, 1768, to May 9, 1769.
