Kids Encyclopedia Facts

East Dunbartonshire is a cool area in Scotland, just north of Glasgow. Even though it's not a huge place, it has some interesting old buildings, including a few castles! These castles tell us stories about what life was like hundreds of years ago. Some are still standing strong, while others are now ruins, but they all have a special history.

Castles in East Dunbartonshire

Let's explore some of the castles you can find in East Dunbartonshire. Each one has its own unique story and style.

Bardowie Castle

Bardowie Castle
Bardowie Castle, a well-preserved tower house.

Bardowie Castle is a really old building, dating back to the 16th century. That's over 500 years ago! It's a type of castle called a tower house. A tower house is a tall, strong building that was used as a home and also for defence. Imagine living in a big, stone tower to keep safe!

This castle is located near a place called Bardowie, close to Milngavie. What's really neat about Bardowie Castle is that it has been carefully restored. This means it's in great condition today, almost like it was when it was first built. It is now a private home, so people live there.

Craigend Castle

Craigend Castle is a bit different from Bardowie. It was built much later, in 1812. This castle is known as a castellated mansion. This means it's a large, fancy house that was designed to look like a castle, with towers and battlements, but it wasn't mainly built for defence. It was more about showing off wealth and style!

Sadly, Craigend Castle is now a ruin. This means parts of it have fallen down, and it's not a complete building anymore. However, it's still a cool place to visit because it's located in the beautiful Mugdock Country Park. The park is owned by the East Dunbartonshire Council, so you can explore the area around the ruins. Interestingly, this mansion was built on the spot where an even older castle used to stand.

Lennox Castle

Lennox Castle, a large castellated mansion now in ruins.

Lennox Castle is another example of a castellated mansion. It was built in 1841, making it the newest of the castles on this list. Like Craigend, it was designed to look like a grand castle, but it served as a large country house.

This castle is located near Lennoxtown. Unfortunately, Lennox Castle is also a ruin today. Over the years, it has seen different uses, including being a hospital. Now, its impressive stone walls stand as a reminder of its past, surrounded by nature. It's a fascinating place to imagine what life was like in such a grand building.
