Kwara State is a special part of Nigeria, located in the western central area of the country. It was created on May 27, 1967, when the larger Northern region of Nigeria was divided into several new states. Since then, many important leaders have guided Kwara State. These leaders are called either governors or administrators.

• Sunday Ifere (Military Governor): He was in charge from July 1978 to October 1979.
• Salaudeen Latinwo (Military Governor): He served from January 1984 to August 1985.
• Mohammed Ndatsu Umaru (Military Governor): He led the state from August 1985 to December 1987.
• Ahmed Abdullahi (Military Governor): He was in office from December 1987 to July 1988.

• Shaaba Lafiaji (Civilian Governor): He served from January 1992 to November 1993.
• Mohammed Lawal (Civilian Governor): He was governor from May 1999 to May 2003.
• Bukola Saraki (Civilian Governor): He served two terms, from May 2003 to May 2011.
