How the City Council Works
When Aliso Viejo first became a city in 2001, five people were chosen to be on the city council. The city council helps make important decisions for the city.
First City Leaders
Carmen Vali was chosen as the first mayor. She played a big part in helping Aliso Viejo become a city. Cynthia Pickett was chosen as the "mayor pro tem." This means she would step in if the mayor was not available. Both Carmen and Cynthia were re-elected in 2006. They both got married during their time in office. Carmen Vali became Carmen Vali-Cave, and Cynthia Pickett became Cynthia Adams.
Other Early Council Members
Also elected in 2001 were Bill Phillips, Karl Warkomski, and Greg Ficke. These three were also re-elected to the City Council in 2004.
Changes Over Time
The city council usually chooses a new mayor from its five members each year. Greg Ficke is the only original council member who has not served as mayor. Cynthia Adams and Carmen Vali-Cave are the only original members who have been mayor more than once. For a while, the same five people served on the city council since the city started. This changed when Karl Warkomski and Cynthia Adams left in 2007.
