The mayor of Kansas City, Missouri is the top leader in the city government of Kansas City, Missouri. This person helps guide the city and works with the city council to make important decisions.
Since the 1920s, Kansas City has used a special way of running its government. It's called a "council-manager government." This means a city manager handles most of the daily tasks of running the city.
Even though the city manager handles many things, the mayor is still very important. The mayor helps create new ideas for the city. They also lead all the meetings of the city council. The mayor even gets to vote on decisions made by the council. Because of these roles, the mayor has a lot of real power in the city.
Since 1946, mayors of Kansas City have been chosen by the city's voters. They serve for four years at a time. A mayor can only serve two terms in total. City elections are "non-partisan," which means candidates run without saying they belong to a political party. The mayor's office is on the 29th floor of the Kansas City City Hall. This is the highest floor in the building.
The current mayor of Kansas City is Quinton Lucas. He was elected in 2019.
