Miami-Dade County is a large area in Florida, USA. It includes the famous city of Miami and many other towns. The Mayor of Miami-Dade County is like the chief leader for this whole area. They help make important decisions and manage how the county works.

The mayor's job is to oversee many services that affect people's daily lives. This includes things like public transportation, parks, libraries, and emergency services. They work with the County Commission to make sure the county runs smoothly.

Who Are the Mayors of Miami-Dade County?

Since 1964, several people have served as the mayor of Miami-Dade County. Each mayor has helped shape the county during their time in office.

Early Mayors

  • Chuck Hall was the very first mayor. He served from 1964 to 1970. He was a member of the Democratic Party.
  • Stephen P. Clark became mayor after Chuck Hall. He served from 1970 to 1972. He was also a Democrat.
  • Jack Orr was mayor from 1972 to 1974. He was a Democrat.
  • Stephen P. Clark returned for a second time. He was mayor again from 1974 to 1993. This was a very long term!

Changes to the Mayor's Role

For a few years, the way the county government worked changed. Because of a court ruling in 1992, the position of mayor was stopped for a short time. The county government was reorganized.

But don't worry, the mayor's job was brought back in 1996! The next year, voters decided to change the county's name to Miami-Dade County.

Mayors Since 1996

  • Alex Penelas was the first mayor after the position was brought back. He served from 1996 to 2004. He was a Democrat.
  • Carlos Alvarez became mayor in 2004 and served until 2011. He was a Republican.
  • Carlos A. Giménez took office in 2011. He served as mayor until 2020. He was a Republican.

Current Mayor: Daniella Levine Cava

The current mayor of Miami-Dade County is Daniella Levine Cava. She became mayor on November 17, 2020. She is the first woman to hold this important position. Mayor Levine Cava is a member of the Democratic Party. She works hard to lead the county and make decisions that help everyone who lives there.
