The Little House Wayside is a special park area in Pepin County, Wisconsin. It covers about 3 acres (1.2 hectares) of land. This spot is very important because it's where the famous author Laura Ingalls Wilder was born on February 7, 1867.

The Wayside is located about 7 miles (11 km) northwest of Pepin, Wisconsin. It's in a town called Stockholm and about one mile southeast of Lund. You can find it on County Highway CC.

Laura Ingalls Wilder's Birthplace

Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote many popular books about her childhood. These books are known as the Little House series. The first book, Little House in the Big Woods, describes her early life in a log cabin in a dense forest. The Little House Wayside is the exact place where that first cabin stood.

The Replica Cabin

At the Wayside, you can see a copy of the house described in Little House in the Big Woods. This replica cabin helps visitors imagine what life was like for Laura and her family. Inside, the cabin is unfurnished, meaning it doesn't have furniture. However, it has a fireplace, two bedrooms, and a loft area. You can also find information about Laura Ingalls Wilder and her family inside.

Exploring the Area

When Laura was born, this area was a thick hardwood forest. Today, the Little House Wayside is surrounded by open farmland. This shows how much the land has changed over time. The Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society takes care of the site. The replica house closes for the winter when the snow gets deep, so it's best to visit during warmer months.
