Llywarch ap Hyfaidd facts for kids
Llywarch ap Hyfaidd was a king who ruled the Welsh kingdom of Dyfed from about 893 until around 904. During his time, Dyfed was taken over by King Cadell of Ceredigion and his son Hywel. Ceredigion was another kingdom in Wales, sometimes called Seisyllwg.
Llywarch's Rule in Dyfed
Llywarch was the king of Dyfed, a kingdom located in what is now southwest Wales. He became king around the year 893. Kings in those days were powerful leaders who ruled over their lands and people.
The End of Dyfed's Independence
Around 904, Llywarch's kingdom of Dyfed faced attacks. King Cadell of Ceredigion and his son, Hywel, wanted to expand their own lands. They launched several attacks on Dyfed. Historical records from that time, like Asser's Life of King Alfred, mention these attacks.
After Llywarch's Death
Llywarch died around 904. After his death, his brother, Rhodri, briefly became king of Dyfed. However, Hywel, the son of King Cadell, soon took firm control of Dyfed. He then combined Dyfed with the lands he had inherited from his own father. This created a new, larger kingdom called Deheubarth.
Some old Welsh stories say that Hywel gained control of Dyfed peacefully. These stories suggest he married Llywarch's daughter, Elen. However, other historical accounts show that Cadell and Hywel took Dyfed through repeated attacks and conquest.
