Loch Moy is a beautiful freshwater loch (which is the Scottish word for lake). It is located in the Scottish Highlands, close to the village of Moy and the city of Inverness.

The name Loch Moy comes from the Scottish Gaelic words Loch A'Mhoigh. This means "the Loch of the Plain."

History of Loch Moy

Loch Moy has a fascinating history, especially because of an island found within it. This island is known as the Isle of Moy.

Moy Castle and Clan Mackintosh

On the Isle of Moy, you can find the old ruins of Moy Castle. This castle was once the main home for the Chiefs of Clan Mackintosh. The Clan Mackintosh was an important Scottish family. They lived at Moy Castle from the 1300s until around the year 1700.

Records from the Old Statistical Account of Scotland tell us more about the castle. They describe the ruins of a house with four rooms that had fireplaces. Above the main gate, there was an inscription. This inscription said that the castle was built in 1665. It was built by Lachlan Mackintosh, who was the 20th chief of the Clan Mackintosh.

Around 1700, the Mackintosh family decided to build a new home. They moved from the island castle to a new house called Moy Hall. This new home was built on the land nearby.
