Hon. Lockhart Gordon (born 1732 – died 24 March 1788) was an important person in the British army. He was also a leader in India when Britain ruled there. He held a special job called Judge-Advocate-General of Bengal.

Early Life and Career

Lockhart Gordon was born in 1732. He was the third son of John Gordon, who was the 3rd Earl of Aboyne. His mother was Grace Lockhart.

Lockhart first studied to become a lawyer. But he later decided to join the army instead. He became a high-ranking officer, a lieutenant-colonel.

He served in the army in India. While he was there, he was given a very important role. In 1787, he became the Judge-Advocate-General of Bengal. This job meant he was a top legal officer for the British in that part of India.

Family Life

Lockhart Gordon was married two times. His first wife was Isabella Levi. They married on 25 April 1753. Sadly, she passed away a year later, on 17 March 1754. They did not have any children.

He married his second wife, Catherine Wallop, on 3 October 1770. Catherine's father was John Wallop, Viscount Lymington, a well-known politician. Her aunt was Catherine Barton, who was the niece of the famous scientist Sir Isaac Newton.

Lockhart and Catherine had three children together:

  • Caroline Gordon (1772 – 13 December 1801)
  • Reverend Lockhart Gordon
  • Loudon Harcourt Gordon, who became an officer in the Royal Artillery

Lockhart Gordon died in Calcutta, India, on 24 March 1788.
