The History of Loeb's Store
The story of Loeb's began with Alex Loeb. He was a businessman who came to Meridian in the late 1800s. Alex moved from Germany to America. His brother, Simon Loeb, helped him come to the United States. Simon had arrived in Columbus, Mississippi in 1867.
Alex Loeb opened his first store in Meridian in 1887. People said that railroad workers in the early 1900s would only buy clothes from Alex Loeb's store. Alex was a friendly person. He was known for his white mustache and a cigar. He would personally greet every customer who came into his store.
Family Takes Over the Business
After Alex Loeb, his son Abraham Marshall Loeb and his brother Henry S. Loeb took over the store. Later, Abraham's son, Robert Switzer Loeb Sr., and his brother Alexander Marshall Loeb ran the business.
In the 1970s, Robert and Alex bought another department store called Marks-Rothenberg Co. They ran both businesses for a few years. Then, they sold the company to Zale Corporation.
Loeb's Today
In 1987, Robert S. Loeb Jr. came back to Meridian. He had been working at a department store in Alabama. Robert Jr. wanted to bring the family clothing tradition back to Meridian.
Today, Robert S. Loeb Jr. runs Loeb's. The store is still on Front Street in Downtown Meridian. Under his leadership, Loeb's has changed. It now focuses more on outdoor and lifestyle clothing and gear.
Shopping at Loeb's Online
Loeb's has had a website since 2004. However, they did not start selling products online until 2013. In the fall of 2013, Loeb's launched a new website. This allowed customers to buy products from the store online.
In 2017, Loeb's announced a new and improved website. It had special technology to keep track of products. This made online shopping easier for customers. In 2019, Loeb's decided to close its online store. They wanted to focus more on helping customers in person at their physical store.
