The Story of Loeb's

Alex Loeb was a merchant, which means he sold things, in Meridian in the late 1800s. He came to Meridian from Germany to open his very first store. Alex was brought to the United States by his brother, Simon Loeb, who had arrived earlier. Simon came to America in 1867.
In 1874, Simon and his younger brother, Julius, opened a store together. They sold things like fabric, clothes, and shoes. Even though Simon didn't have much money when he first arrived, he and his brother became very successful.
A Store for Everyone
During Meridian's "golden age" (a time when the city was doing really well) in the early 1900s, people said that even railroad workers who wanted to look sharp would only buy clothes from Alex Loeb's store! Alex Loeb was a friendly person. He was known for his white mustache and always having a cigar. He would personally greet every customer who walked into his store.
After Alex Loeb, his son, Abraham Marshall Loeb, and his brother Henry S. Loeb took over the business.
Then, the business went to A. Marshall Loeb's son, Robert Switzer Loeb Sr., and his brother Alexander Marshall Loeb. In the 1970s, Robert and Alex bought another department store called Marks-Rothenberg Co. They ran both businesses until the late 1970s when the company was sold to a bigger national store chain.
Loeb's Returns to Meridian
In 1987, Robert S. Loeb Jr. came back to Meridian. He had been working as a buyer for a department store in another city. When he returned, he wanted to open a men's clothing store. He remembered his great-grandfather's idea: offer customers great quality items, quick help, and lots of Southern hospitality.
Robert Jr. wanted to bring the clothing tradition back to Meridian. Today, Robert S. Loeb Jr. runs Loeb's. The store is still on Front Street in Downtown Meridian. Under his leadership, the store has changed to focus more on outdoor and lifestyle clothing and gear.
Loeb's Online Shopping
Loeb's has had a website since 2004. However, they didn't start selling products online until 2013. In the fall of 2013, Loeb's launched a new website where customers could buy items from the store online.
In 2017, Loeb's announced another new e-commerce website. This website had special technology to make sure what you saw online was also available in the store. It also made online shopping easier and more fun. In 2019, Loeb's decided to stop selling things online. They wanted to focus all their attention on helping customers who visit the store in person.

If you can't visit the store, Loeb's even offers shopping guides by appointment over FaceTime! You don't have to buy anything to use this service.
Loeb's also provides tuxedo rental services. This is great for weddings, school dances, or other fancy events.
The store was even recognized by MR Magazine for selling books by local Mississippi authors. One example is "Gridiron Gold," a book of stories from famous Mississippi high school football coaches.
The North Face Concept Store
On the second floor of Loeb's, there's a special section called The North Face Concept Store. This part of the store is just for the outdoor clothing brand, The North Face. It's designed to look just like a stand-alone The North Face store, even down to the lights and paint!
