Lois Harjo Ball was born in 1906. Her parents were Henry Marsey Harjo and Katie Monahwee. She was also the granddaughter of a famous Muscogee chief named Menawa. Lois finished Okmulgee High School in 1926.

Lois Harjo Ball's Art Career

Lois loved art and painted throughout her life. She strongly supported Native American art. Lois also encouraged others to learn about their own heritage through art. She studied at Oklahoma City University and Stephens College. Her paintings are well-known. You can find her artwork in places like the Creek Council House and Museum in Okmulgee.

Lois Harjo Ball's Legacy

Lois Harjo Ball had a big influence on her grand-niece, Joy Harjo. Joy Harjo later became a famous United States Poet Laureate. Joy even dedicated her 1983 book, She Had Some Horses, to her great-aunt Lois.

There is also a special scholarship named after Lois. It's called the Naomi & Lois Harjo Scholarship. This scholarship helps Muscogee Nation students who want to study fine arts.
