Londesborough Barracks is a special military building in Kingston upon Hull, England. It is a place where soldiers train and work.
History of the Barracks
This building was finished in 1864. It was first built to be the main base for a group called the 1st Yorkshire (East Riding) Rifle Volunteer Corps. The barracks were named after Lord Londesborough. He was an important leader for this group.
Over the years, this military unit changed its name. In 1883, it became the 1st Volunteer Battalion, The East Yorkshire Regiment. Then, in 1908, it changed again to the 4th Battalion, The East Yorkshire Regiment.
World War I and Beyond
When World War I started in August 1914, the soldiers from this battalion gathered at the barracks. From there, they went to fight on the Western Front. Other army groups were also based here. These included parts of the Royal Field Artillery.
Some soldiers from the 4th Battalion, The East Yorkshire Regiment, kept using the barracks. They stayed there until 1960. At that time, their battalion joined with another group. They formed the 3rd Battalion the Prince of Wales's Own Regiment of Yorkshire. This new battalion moved to a different base in York.
After that, Londesborough Barracks was given to the Royal Logistic Corps (RLC). In 1967, a new unit called 150 Regiment RLC was formed at Londesborough Barracks.
Who Uses the Barracks Now?
Today, Londesborough Barracks is still an active military site. The main groups based here are:
- The headquarters for 150 Regiment of the Royal Logistic Corps.
- The Band of 150 Regiment RLC, which plays music for military events.
- 523 (Headquarters) Squadron, which helps manage the regiment.
