Museum History: How It Started
The Long Island Children’s Museum first opened its doors in 1993. It was originally located in the old Newsday building. This was across from the Roosevelt Field Mall in East Garden City.
In 2001, the museum moved to a much bigger home. It moved into a former airplane hangar. This new space is huge, with 40,000 square feet spread over two floors. This move gave the museum lots of room for new and exciting exhibits.
What You Can Explore: Fun Exhibits and More
The museum is packed with things to do and see. It has 12 different galleries. Each gallery offers interactive exhibits where you can learn by doing. There are also three studio workshops. Here, you can get creative and make your own art or projects.
If you love shows, there's a 150-seat theater. Here, you can watch performances and learn in a fun way. The museum welcomes over 250,000 visitors every year.
Our Backyard: Outdoor Play and Gardens
One of the most popular spots is the outdoor play area. It is called "Our Backyard." This area opens every spring. It's a great place to play outside and enjoy the fresh air.
"Our Backyard" also has special vegetable gardens. Visitors can even harvest different vegetables right from the garden. It's a cool way to see where your food comes from!
Awards and Recognition: Why LICM is Special
The Long Island Children’s Museum has received some important awards. It was given the National Medal for Museum and Library Service. This award recognizes museums and libraries that make a big difference in their communities.
The museum is also called a "Primary Institution" by the New York State Council on the Arts. This means it is a very important cultural place in New York State. These awards show how much the museum helps kids learn and grow.
