The Long Island Press Story
Before, the Long Island Press was a free magazine. It came out every month and covered local and national news. It also shared stories about arts, entertainment, sports, and different political ideas.
Jed Morey started the newspaper in 2003. His company, Morey Publishing, bought another magazine. That magazine was called The Island Ear. It came out twice a month and was about entertainment.
Morey Publishing changed its name to Long Island Press. This was the same name as an old newspaper that closed in 1977. The new Long Island Press was a free news magazine. Famous writers like Ed Lowe and Lazlow Jones worked there.
Changes in Printing
On March 24, 2011, the Daily News in New York City announced something new. They would print the Long Island Press using their modern printing machines.
In 2014, the Long Island Press stopped printing its paper. They decided to focus only on their website.
What's Happening Now
In April 2017, a company called Schneps Communications bought the Long Island Press. In July 2017, they announced that the magazine would start printing again. It returned in September 2017 as a free monthly magazine. It still shares news and lifestyle stories.
Awards Won by the Press
The Long Island Press won many awards. It received over 300 awards in its 10 years as a print magazine. These awards came from groups like the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies (AAN). Other groups included the Fair Media Council and the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ).
The paper also won the top prize from the New York Press Association. This award is called the Stuart C. Dorman Award for Editorial Excellence. The Long Island Press won it in 2010 and 2012. This meant it was named "Newspaper of the Year" twice in three years.
The Old Long Island Daily Press
The name Long Island Press was also used by a very old daily newspaper. That newspaper lasted for 156 years! It started in 1821 and was first called the Long Island Farmer.
The paper changed its name to The Long Island Daily Press in 1921. Then, in 1967, it shortened its name to Long Island Press. The Sunday paper was called Long Island Sunday Press. Both papers were printed in a large size called broadsheet.
This old newspaper was known for reporting on local government problems. But a long strike by the printing workers forced it to close. It stopped publishing on March 25, 1977.
