What is the Look See Tree?
The Look See Tree is a unique tree found near the town of Coleman, Arkansas. It stands at the corner of Arkansas Highway 83 and Pleasant Springs Road. This tree became famous because of its important job many years ago. It was used as a natural observation point to watch over the forests.
How This Tree Helped Fight Fires
This tall tree was used to watch for fires from around 1930 to 1940. For about ten to fifteen years, it served as a vital lookout. It was the tallest tree in its area at that time. This made it a perfect, inexpensive way for forest rangers to see far away.
Rangers from the Arkansas Forestry Commission used it. They added special climbing pegs to the trunk. These pegs helped them climb high up into the tree. There was also a small platform built in the tree. From this platform, rangers could get a clear view of the surrounding forests. A telephone line was even connected to the tree. This allowed rangers to quickly call their station if they spotted a fire.
Why the Tree was So Important
Using a tree as a lookout was a smart idea. It saved money compared to building a tall tower. The Look See Tree offered a wide view of the forest. This helped rangers find fires quickly before they grew too big. Spotting fires early is super important for keeping forests safe.
A Special Piece of History
Eventually, a proper fire tower was built. This new tower took over the tree's job. But even after it was no longer used, the climbing pegs and platform were left in the tree. They are still there as a reminder of its past.
As of 2006, the Look See Tree was the only lookout tree left in Arkansas. This makes it a very rare and important historical site. It shows us how people used natural resources to protect our environment.
Recognized as a Historic Place
Because of its unique history, the Look See Tree was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This happened on January 23, 2008. Being on this list means it's recognized as a special part of American history. It helps make sure the tree is protected for future generations to learn about.
