Lord Pittenweem facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The title of Lord Pittenweem is a special old Scottish title of nobility. It's like being a very important person in history. This title was first created by King James VI in 1609. The first person to hold it was Frederick Stewart. He was the son of William Stewart, who was a "Commendator" of Pittenweem. A Commendator was someone who managed church lands and money.

In 1614, Frederick Stewart gave this title and its lands to Thomas Erskine. Thomas Erskine later became the 1st Earl of Kellie. For a period between 1631 and 1672, the King (the Crown) held the title. When it later went to the 3rd Earl of Kellie, it was not a new title. Instead, it was given back to him, continuing the original title.

The title was often used for the oldest son of the Earls of Kellie. This was a "courtesy title," meaning it was used out of respect, even if they didn't fully own the Lordship yet. Later, Thomas Alexander Erskine, the 6th Earl of Kellie, passed the title to Sir John Anstruther.

Sir Windham Carmichael-Anstruther, who was the 12th Lord of Pittenweem, managed to sell his family's estates. He also sold the Lordship and Barony of Pittenweem to William Baird of Elie in 1856. William Baird then became the 13th Lord of Pittenweem.

The Lordship was passed down through the Baird family. In 1961, Lady Lavinia Enid Muriel Baird became the Lordess. She then gave the title to William Ronald Crawford Miller, a lawyer, in 1978. After a new law in Scotland in 2000, the Lordship of Pittenweem changed. It became a special kind of property that was no longer directly tied to owning land.

William Ronald Crawford Miller, the 17th Lord of Pittenweem, passed away in 2011. In 2017, Claes Zangenberg was officially recognized as the 18th Lord Baron of Pittenweem. This was done by the Lord Lyon, who is the official in Scotland responsible for coats of arms and noble titles.
