Lords of Trade and Plantations facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Lords of Trade and Plantations was a special group created by King Charles II in 1675. Their main job was to give advice to the King's top advisors, known as the Privy Council. This advice was about how to manage England's many growing colonies around the world.

What Were the Lords of Trade?

This group was like a permanent committee. It was set up to give steady advice on how to run the English colonies. Before 1675, different temporary groups had handled the colonies since 1624.

Why Was This Group Formed?

After King Charles II returned to the throne, a time known as the Stuart Restoration, there were separate committees. One group dealt with trade, and another with colonies (which were often called "plantations" back then). In 1672, these two committees joined together. By 1675, this combined group became more stable and was officially named the Lords of Trade and Plantations.

How Long Did They Last?

The Lords of Trade and Plantations worked for over 20 years. In 1696, a new group took over their responsibilities. This new group was called the Commissioners for Trade and Plantations.
