Early Life and Family

Lorenzo Tandy Hammond was born in 1871. His hometown was Mashpee. His father was Watson F. Hammond, who was a politician. His mother was Rebecca C. Amos. Rebecca's father was a respected Baptist minister.

Becoming a Tribal Chief

In October 1928, a meeting took place. It was at the Herring Pond Baptist Church. After this meeting, the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe chose Lorenzo Hammond as their chief. He took over from his cousin, Nelson D. Simons.

A very important leader, Rev. Leroy C. Perry, swore him in. Rev. Perry was the Chief Sachem. This meant he was the main leader of the entire Wampanoag Nation.

His Work and Inventions

Lorenzo Hammond lived in Cotuit for many years. He worked as a very good plumber. He was successful at Nickerson Plumbing.

He was also a "gifted artist." He used his creativity to invent new things. He invented the Victor Wellpoint. This was a tool for wells. He also created a cranberry separator. This machine helped sort cranberries. Finally, he invented a bicycle brake.

Lorenzo Tandy Hammond passed away in 1959.
