How the Band Started
The band began in 1957. Two brothers, Arturo and Francisco "Pancho" Durazo, loved rock-n-roll music. They lived in a town called Agua Prieta in Sonora, Mexico. This town was right on the border with the United States. This made it easy for them to hear all the popular English songs of the time.
They first called themselves Los Apson Boys. But they quickly changed it to Los Apson. The name "Apson" came from the first letters of their town, Agua Prieta (AP), and the first three letters of their state, Sonora (SON).
Soon, other talented musicians joined them: José Luis García, Frankie Gámez, Raúl Hernández Cota, and Gil Maldonado. Even though people in their town mostly liked ranchera music, Los Apson became very popular. Their music spread far beyond their small town.
Some people criticized the band. They thought Los Apson were too focused on American music instead of Mexican music. But the band kept playing the songs they loved.
Their Big Hits
Los Apson became famous all over Mexico! They had many successful songs. Some of their biggest hits were Spanish versions of popular songs. These included a cover of the Beatles' song "And I Love Her" and the classic "Cotton Fields".
