A Look at the Past: History of Los Martínez del Puerto
For a long time, this land was very dry and had only a few scattered houses.
Roman Times
During the time of Roman Hispania, this area was known for its large fields of esparto grass. This plant was very common here. We know Romans were present because of an archaeological site called 'Villa romana de San Esteban'. This means 'Roman villa of Saint Stephen'.
Islamic Influence
Later, from the 8th to the 10th century, Muslim settlers came to this land during the Islamic Hispania era. They also left behind signs of their presence. These include old farmhouses and special isolated buildings called 'rafales'.
How the Village Began
Between 1238 and 1243, the Muslim kingdom of Murcia faced many challenges. Powerful Christian kingdoms like Castille and Aragón were growing. The king, Ibn Hud, decided to become a vassal of Castille. This meant the Christian king, Alfonso X of Castille, took control of the area. It then became the Kingdom of Murcia.
The village of Los Martínez del Puerto started around this time. A noble family named Los Martínez gained special ownership rights over these lands. This is how the village got its name. In 1892, Los Martínez del Puerto got its very own church building.
